Five Solas of the Reformation: Spiritual Health
As we remember the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, we affirm the five basic tenants set out by Martin Luther: grace alone, faith alone, Christ alone, Scripture alone and to the glory of God alone. As we navigate the waters our post-Christian and pluralistic society, it is vital to keep these guiding theological “stars” in our sights. How do these theological truths shape and transform our lives as spiritually healthy disciples of Jesus pursuing missional Kingdom living under the Lordship of Christ? And in the true spirit of the reformation, we are reminded that this is an on-going process—of always reforming and being transformed by the Spirit’s power.

Sola Scriptura: By Scripture Alone – 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5
Scripture is God’s Word to us, our highest and final authority. This is not to say that it is alone our source of knowledge or authority. Scripture contains everything needed for salvation and right living. Clearly God wants us to be in relationship with him and with others. When we immerse ourselves in God’s Word and study God’s Word together we are God’s aroma to the world around us.

Sola Gratia: By Grace Alone – Ephesians 2:1-10
Grace itself is freely given – the greatest gift of all. This can seem too good to be true, but it is! It’s free grace though, not cheap grace, and grateful living and involvement in ministry is a beautiful response to grace – not as a way to quality for grace, but as an appropriate response.

Sola Fide: By Faith Alone – Romans 3:21-31, James 2:14-26
Salvation is not based on human effort or good works. We can’t earn our status before God. God’s gift of salvation is received by faith alone. So, is faith enough, or do we add other requirements – we need to do x or be y — for ourselves to be loved by God, or other requirements for us be considered brothers or sisters in Christ. If we are recipients of the unconditional love of God how do we show that in how we treat one-another and share life together.

Sola Christus: Through Christ Alone – Acts 4:1-20
Jesus is the only mediator between God and humanity, and there is salvation in no other name. In our global age of religious pluralism it is considered politically incorrect to say that Jesus is the only way through his finished work on the cross. However this is the message of Jesus and the Scriptures, that we are his church are called to continue to proclaim on mission to our neighbours, communities, country, and world. Only Jesus offers grace, and only by free grace are we saved by faith in Jesus.

Soli Deo Gloria: To the Glory of God Alone – Luke 2:8-20
In response to the amazing news of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus, that Scriptures proclaim, we give God all glory, honour and praise, and this overflows in worship that flows into being on mission to bring the message of peace with God to all and to touch life with peace.
